The New Household

Agents move in. Grandparents move back. Everything shifts.

The household of 2040 is a small operating system: humans, pets, appliances, and multiple agents with different roles. Domestic labour, elder care, and child supervision get distributed in ways our grandparents would find unrecognisable.

Care, redistributed

Ambient assistants can watch over a small child, remind a parent of medication, and coordinate school pickups. That frees enormous amounts of unpaid labour โ€” historically borne by women โ€” for other things.

Multi-generational, again

As housing costs stay high and lifespans extend, more households will span three or four generations. AI mediates conflict, translates across cultures, and quietly runs the calendar.

The screen-time question

The debate about children and screens is about to get much harder. An AI companion is not a video โ€” it responds, remembers, and forms a relationship. We do not know yet what that does to developing minds.

Questions worth arguing about

  • โ—†Should children have their own private AI?
  • โ—†Who is responsible when a household agent gives bad advice?
  • โ—†What tasks should stay unautomated on principle?
